Sripadaya


Only mountain in the world that receives benefactions and veneration of devotees belonging to different faiths. This is 2,243 m tall. It is well known for the Sri Pada, i.e., "sacred footprint", a 1.8 m rock formation near the summit, which in Buddhist tradition is held to be footprint of Buddha. Portuguese Christians believed St Thomas and the eunuch of Candace, queen of Ethiopia.

THE SEASON

THE MOUNTAIN IS MOST OFTEN SCALED FROM DECEMBER TO MAY. DURING OTHER MONTHS IT IS HARD TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN DUE TO VERY HEAVY RAIN, EXTREME WIND, AND THICK MIST. THE PEAK PILGRIMAGE SEASON IS IN APRIL, AND THE GOAL IS TO BE ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN AT SUNRISE, WHEN THE DISTINCTIVE SHAPE OF THE MOUNTAIN CASTS A TRIANGULAR SHADOW ON THE SURROUNDING PLAIN AND CAN BE SEEN TO MOVE QUICKLY DOWNWARD AS THE SUN RISES.



THEMPLE OF THE TOOTH


A Brief History of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a world-renowned place of worship, where the left Canine tooth of Gautama Buddha is enshrined. The temple which is venerated by thousands of local & foreign devotees and tourists daily was named as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988. The temple which carries a lot of value to Buddhists all over the world also has immense cultural value. The architecture is of unique Kandyan architectural style with a combination of the unique style used to build “Dalada Mandira” the shrines which housed the Sacred Tooth Relic previously in other kingdoms. The temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is built in the city of Kandy near the ancient Royal Palace which is situated to the North of the temple and the forest reserve called “Udawaththa Kelaya” to the East. The famous Kandy Lake also known as “Kiri Muhuda” to the South and “Natha & Paththini Devala” on the West. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings using gold, silver, bronze, and ivory.



Peradeniya Botanical Garden

 The Botanical Garden at Peradeniya was formally established in 1843 with plants brought from Kew Garden, Slave Island, Colombo, and the Kalutara Garden in Kalutara. The Royal Botanic Garden, Peradeniya was made more independent and expanded under George Gardner as superintendent in 1844.

Peradeniya Botanic Gardensbotanical garden in Peradeniya, neaKandySri Lanka, noted for its rich and varied collections of tropical woody plants. Occupying 59 hectares (146 acres), it has about 4,000 species of plants. The most important specimens of the garden include palms, some of which are planted in impressive avenues. Significant, too, are the collections of orchids, gymnosperms, and flowering trees.

The gardens were founded in 1821 primarily to introduce coffee trees and various other tropical plants of economic importance to the region. Even after it took on a more botanical emphasis in the 1840s, the garden remained a centre for horticultural activities. Under the directorship of the botanist George H.K. Thwaites, the garden played a pivotal role in establishing the country’s flourishing tea industry in the late 1870s. Thwaites also brought in and cultivated the Brazilian rubber tree, which became a crop producer vital to Sri Lanka’s economy. The botanical collection has developed into one of the finest in the region.


Hakgala Botanical Garden


The gorgeous Hakgala Botanical Garden is one of the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. It is also the second largest garden in Sri Lanka. 

Hakgala Botanical Garden is situated on the Nuwara Eliya - Badulla main road, 16 km from Nuwara Eliya. The garden has a cool temperate climate because of altitude is 5,400 feet above sea level. The mean annual temperature ranges between 16 °C to 30 °C during the course of a year.

Sigiriya is one of the most valuable historical monuments of Sri Lanka. Referred by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World this ancient palace and fortress complex has significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is probably the most visited tourist destination of Sri Lanka.

The palace is located in the heart of the island between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane on a massive rocky plateau 370 meters above the sea level.
